 Qiyun started violin studying since 4 year old and achieved top grade of China national violin examination with excellence at age 11. She switch to viola study after admitted into the
music school attached to Central Conservatory of Music with full scholarship in Beijing, where she won second Prize in Performance,Thrid price and Excellence Award in performance from CCOM and was principle viola of Chinese Youth Symphony orchestra, giving performances in venues such as China National theatre, the Great Hall of the People and concert in Welcome 2008 Olympics with Beijing TV.

She continued study in USA with full scholarship with Paul Neubauer. . She was selected as Ambassador and won first prize at Doublestop Foundation Competition New York as well as first prize at International Knopf Competition in Düsseldorf Germany. She was awarded full scholarship from Chautauque Summer Festival, New York String Seminar, Heifetz International Music Festival, Carl Flesch Academy and International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove UKShe studied in Masterclass with Yuri Bashmet, Garth Knox, Nobuko Imai, Thomas Riebl, Hartmut Rohde, Atar Arad, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Micheal Tree, Heidi Castleman and Ralph Kirshbaum. In concerts she collaborated with Atar Arad, Mark Kaplan, Ralph Kirshbaum, Yeal Weiss and Robert Vernon.  In summer 2014 she moved to Deutschland and studied at Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. She was scholarship and instrument loan recipient of Ritter Stiftung Hamburg, Deutsche Musikleben Stiftung and Beare's International Violin Society, where she was sponsed of an Amati Brother viola at 2016 International Tertis Competition. She becomes student of Yuri Bashmet since then.


Qiyun Zhao specializes in Chinese traditional folk style of playing, a humanized tonespeak and musical breathing, applying special bow-arm technique of traditional Chinese instruments. She is very passionate about folk music all over the world and of the music that apply folk tone in it. She played for jazz band and contemporary ensembles. She is also a singer for traditional Chinese songs and fond of Chinese various kinds of regional operas. She is founding intercultural ensemble with friends right now.
