Amy Hwang
Amy Hwang, 15, is a sophomore at Glenelg High School. She started the flute at age 6 and currently studies with Mrs. Leah Arsenault-Barrick of the National Symphony Orchestra. Amy was the Grand Prize Winner of the Washington National Youth Music Competition. She has also earned First Place in the Columbia Orchestra Young Artist Competition, the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition, the High School Ross-Roberts Competition, the Howard County High School G/T Orchestra (HSGTO) Concerto Competition, and the Asian American Music Society International Competition. She has also won top prizes at the Music Teachers National Association National Competition, the United States Army Orchestra Young Artist Competition, the YMIC International Competition, and the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra (BSYO) Concerto Competition.
Amy is one of the five flutists selected for the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA) for its 2020 season. Amy is also the principal flutist of the HSGTO and rotating principal flutist of the BSYO. Amy has performed in a masterclass for Sir James Galway, has taken a private lesson with Ms. Jasmine Choi, and has performed with the YouTube channel TwoSet Violin. Amy has also performed at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and as a featured soloist with the Columbia Orchestra, the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, and the BSYO. In April of 2020, she will perform with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. To give back to her community, Amy is the Founder and CEO of the Do Re Mi Project (www.doremiproject.org), a website that connects elementary and middle school students with high school volunteers for free online music tutoring. She is also the Co-Vice President of her school’s Golden Melody Club and a member of the Tri-M National Music Honor Society and Back to Bach project.
Outside of flute, Amy is the Co-President of her school’s Speech and Debate Club. She is also currently pursuing her second degree black belt in Taekwondo and Hapkido, and teaches both as an assistant instructor.
