Alexander Wu

Alexander Wu is a sophomore at the Pennsylvania State University majoring in Political Science. As a William J. and Lois Kesteson Leight Memorial Fund recipient, he is simultaneously pursuing a degree in Cello Performance under the tutelage of professor Kim Cook. Previously, his primary mentors have been Jeffrey Solow and Jie Jin. Alex made his debut as a soloist with the Warminster Symphony in 2010. Since then, he has made solo appearances with the Penn State Philharmonic, Bucks County, Ambler, Bryn Athyn, and Southeastern Pennsylvania symphony orchestras. In 2018, he was selected as a National YoungArts Foundation Merit winner, a Jr. Music Ambassador for the Harmony for Peace Foundation, and a Boston Music Institute Masterclass Fellow.

Alex has also appeared as a guest performer at the Greta, Caramoor, and Greenlake Music Festivals.

In addition to being a soloist, Alex is a member of the Penn State Undergraduate String Quartet and is the assistant principal cellist of the Penn State Philharmonic. He was a four-year member of Philadelphia's Braverman String Quartet and performed as the assistant principal cellist of the Temple University Youth Chamber Orchestra performing at HARPA concert hall in Reykjavik, Iceland. In 2017 and 2018, he traveled with Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra of the USA as a principal and section cellist, playing concerts in Asia and Latin America under the baton of Marin Alsop and Michael Tilson-Thomas. This past winter, he was invited to attend the New York String Orchestra Seminar under the direction of Jaime Laredo.

Outside of music, Alex is a representative in the Penn State student government and is a brother of the Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity.
