Rachel Joo


Rachel Joo is a senior at the Beacon School in New York. She is studying cello with Vladimir Panteleyev in the Young Artist Program with honors at the Lucy Moses School. She currently serves as principal cellist of ISO's Symphony Orchestra.

Rachel was interviewed by Andrea Grimes from CBS and performed on WCBS-TV in 2018.
She received Honorable Mention twice from the Inter School Orchestra Concerto Competition in 2015 and 2016.

She won a gold medal and the Best Strings Technique award at the 2016 Forte international Music Competition and performed at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. In 2016 and 2018 she performed in the Henry Schneider Scholarship Concert at Merkin Hall.

She performed at the Scandinavia House Victor Borge Hall as a second place winner of 2017 Rondo Vanguard competition, and also performed at Merkin Hall as a second place winner of 2019 International Grande Music Competition of the chamber group division. She performed in cello masterclasses with Suren Bagratuni (2017) and Fred Sherry (2018).

In past summers, she has attended Point CounterPoint, a music camp located in Vermont, since 2013. In 2015 and 2016, she performed in the Advanced Chamber Music Concert in Brandon Town Hall, Vermont.

She also studies the piano and at the age of eleven, she appeared in ""The Positively Ernie TV Show."" She performed at Steinway Hall (2012) and at the Kosciuszko Foundation (2013 and 2014). She performed in piano masterclasses with Dr. Phillip Kawin (2013) and Jerome Rose (2015). In 2013 she won second place for the Concerto Competition with piano at the Diller- Quaile school of music. She was a recipient of 2013 Irving Caesar Music Scholarship.

She is also a member of Ko-Art drum team and won 1st place in the 2019 World Korean Traditional Art Competition.

Rachel also won the Bronze President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2020. Despite her busy schedule she served her community at Mount Sinai Hospital concerts, TD bank concerts, Concerts In Motion for elderly people, and mentored cellists at ISO Morningside Orchestra.
