Malcolm Liu


Malcolm Liu is a 21-year old piano major at the University of Kansas, where he studies with Dr. Scott McBride Smith. He won Third Prize in the 2014 International Institute for Young Musicians (IIYM) International Competition, Second Prize in the 2015 Steinway National Precollege Competition (China) and received First Places in both the 2015 Kansas State Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Senior Competition and the 2017 Kansas State and West Central MTNA Young Artist Competitions. Also, he won Third Prize in the 2018 World Piano Teacher Association International Piano Competition (WPTA IPC). He acquired the Honorable Mention in the 2018 Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition (YYPA) and was invited to participate in the 2019 YYPA. He received Third Prize in the 5th (2018) ENKOR Int’l Music Competition (piano division, category C). Besides, he performed in the Final Concert of the 2018 Naftzger Young Artists Audition and won the First Place of Piano Division. He won the Second Prize in the 2018 ""Second Annual Pittsburg Piano Competition"" Young-Artist Division and performed with The Pittsburg Orchestra. Most recently, he won the Gold Medalist in the 2018 International Keyboard Odyssiad Festival (IKOF) Level-C Competition.

Malcolm Liu started his professional study at the Affiliated Middle School of Sichuan Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Dr. Chenggang Yang. He finished his middle school and acquired his high school diploma there. Later, he was granted a substantial scholarship and invited to attend School of Music at the University of Kansas (KU). Currently, he is working on his bachelor’s degree of music and he will graduate in May 2019. During his study in the U. S., he was recommended and selected many times to perform in the KU School of Music honor recitals. He also Obtained scholarships from SAI (Sigma Alpha Iota) and KCMC (Kansas City Music Club) and performed many times in their annual winner recitals. (Kansas City, Missouri) In 2018, his partner and him participated in the MTNA–Stecher and Horowitz Two Piano Competition as a representative piano duo of KU School of Music. Later, they held their piano duo concert at KU and it was very well received. He performed in the Final Concert of the Naftzger Young Artists Audition, (Wichita, Kansas) and later performed Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, opus 16 with the Pittsburg Orchestra. (Pittsburg, Kansas) He is working on a combined concert at KU with his collaborative singer now, and will hold it at the end of January.
