Lia Rafaela de Marcos e Melo

Lia Rafaela de Marcos e Melo (2001) has been playing viola and studying with teacher Alice Neves for the past eight years, at Vila Real Regional Music Conservatory.
She has played in master classes with well-established artists, including Mrs.Sophie Arbuckle (Juilliard School); Isabel Villanueva; Joana Pereira; Danuta Grossmannová; and Mr. Ryszard Wóycicki, Jorge Alves; David Wyn Lloyd; António Pereira and Mateusz Stasto.

She was awarded, several times, in Portugal and throughout Europe, America and Asia. In the past two years, as a soloist, Lia Melo has won two 2nd prizes in the Grand Prize Virtuoso London 2016, UK (Intermediate Category) and in the ENKOR INT'l Music Competition (Strings 3rd Edition); and twenty one other 1st prizes, from national and international competitions, including the Grand Prize Virtuoso Salzburg (Intermediate Category) and Vienna (Advanced Category), Austria; the 2nd Rising Stars Grand Prix 2017 in Berlin, Germany (Advanced Category); twice in the New York Golden Classic Music Awards, United States of America (Intermediate Category in 2017 & Advanced Category in 2018) and in the 5th and the 6th Contest City of Vigo of Violin, Viola and Cello, Spain (Category B in 2016 and Category C in 2017); the Great Composers Competition - The Art of Instrumental Performance - The Art of Strings (Group IV); the 3rd Vasco Barbosa National Strings Competition, Lisbon (Viola Juvenil); the 2017 IMKA - International Music Competition in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina (Advanced Category); the 2nd Ilda Moura Competiton, Oporto, Portugal (Category E); the 2017 eMuse International Online Music Competition, Greece (Category D); the 1st International String Competition Artur Fernandes Fão, Vila Praia de Âncora, Portugal (Category C); the 1st North International Music Competition 2017, Stockholm, Sweden (Category VI); among others.

With a rich artistic activity consisting of more than a hundred recitals and concerts, during the past two years Lia Melo has played as a soloist with Portuguese Ensemble Symphony Orchestra (Max Bruch Concerto for viola and clarinet), with the Spanish Vigo Superior Music Conservatory Orchestra (Cecil Forsyth viola Concerto), with “Camerata Atlântica” (Stamitz viola Concerto) and with Vila Real Music Conservatory String Orchestra (Telemann Concert for 2 violas). She was also selected to the Berliner Philharmoniker BE-PHIL Orchestra, playing under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, and as a Reserve Member for the 2018 European Union Youth Orchestra, from a very large pool of over 2000 players who auditioned in 28 countries.

Lia Melo has not only held the position of section leader in multiple orchestras including Ensemble Symphonic Orchestra, 1st Portuguese-German Youth Orchestra, Chaves Arts Academy Philharmonic Orchestra and Vila Real Regional Music Conservatory String Orchestra, but she has also been a member of JOP (Youth Portuguese Orchestra) and Atlantic Coast Orchestra.
As a chamber musician Lia Melo has performed extensively with the Vila Real String Quartet and the Vila Real String Trio (founding member of both) with multiple concerts and awards, in Portugal and Spain.

She has been invited to perform in a significant number of notable concert halls in Portugal, across Europe, Asia and USA, among others, at the Lisbon Belém Cultural Centre, Portugal; Auditório Mar de Vigo, Spain; Carnegie Hall (Weill Recital Hall), New York, U.S.A; Berlin Kammermusiksaal Philharmonie, Germany; Wiener Saal, Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria; Royal Albert Hall (Elgar Room), London, UK; Gläserner Saal, Musikverein, Vienne, Austria; Army Concert Hall, Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina; Athens Byzantine Museum, Greece
