Tia Tyng Chang


Tia Tyng Chang, age 15, is a sophomore at Gunn High School. She started her music studies when she was 5 years old, and her first solo piano recital was in 2009 when she was 7 years old. Tia also debuted with a part San Francisco Conservatory of Music symphony at the age of 10, performing a Mozart piano concerto. She is an avid chamber musician, and is currently studying chamber music at the California Music Preparatory Academy, where she has volunteered extensively in hospitals and retirement communities. Current member of the award winning Zeitlos Trio, which actively performs and competes all over the United States. Tia has won multiple awards, including first place of the Silicon Valley Second School Competition, the Junior Bach Festival, and has been a prizewinner in the Burlingame Music Club Competition. She was also in the 2016 Gina Bachauer International Competition. Tia attended the 2017 International Summer Sessions in Paris, France, the 2016 Walnut Hill International Music Festival in Natick, Massachusetts, and the 2014 Morningside Music Bridge Music Festival in Calgary, Canada. She has performed in master classes given by Bruce Brubaker, Keith Snell, John Perry, Marilyn Engle, Mark Durand, Ivan Sokolov, and David Moroz, among others. Additionally, Tia was invited to perform in a series of Concerts at the Presidio and numerous recitals in the San Francisco and the surrounding suburbs. She currently studies with John McCarthy.

Tia is deeply passionate about sharing the joys of classical music with others, and is an active leader in the Back to BACH Project, which is an international initiative to inspire children and instill a love for music in them. She is the regional director of the SF, as well as the Northern Taiwan regions. Her team frequents local elementary schools and libraries and performs for children. When not playing the piano, Tia competes in public speaking and she is a member of the varsity girls’ golf team.
