Catherine Moore
Catherine Moore, senior at Westfield High School.
Catherine began seriously studying jazz piano technique and improvisation with Greg Natic in 2014. She trained at Westminster Conservatory in small combo jazz improvisation and studied at Rutgers Mason Gross Summer Jazz Intensive in 2015 where she was selected as a big band pianist and studied small combo improvisation. She also studied jazz at the Eastman School of Music’s “Summer Jazz Studies” program with Harold Danko. Catherine has been the principal pianist for Westfield High School’s top jazz band since her freshman year. This past year, she won a “Best Soloist” award at the Princeton Jazz Festival, and played in the NJMEA Region Jazz Honors Combo. In 2016, she began studying classical piano and the Taubman technique with Sondra Tammam. She also returned to Westminster Conservatory for their classical “Piano Intensive” directed by Ingrid Clarfield. In 2017, Catherine attended the Eastman Summer Music Horizons classical music program, where she studied with Tamari Gurevich-Hill.
In addition to piano, Catherine loves choral performance and sings in WHS’s concert choir and its select Chorale/Choraleers where she is the student director, accompanist and officer. She is also a three-year member of the NJMEA All State Mixed Chorus. In 2016, Catherine was the musical director and accompanist for the NJ Youth Theatre’s production of “A Christmas Carol.”
Collaborating and connecting with other musicians is where Catherine finds genuine fulfillment. She loves playing in the WHS jazz band and also plays in a jazz combo that performs in local venues. She especially enjoys accompanying and supporting fellow students for performances, college auditions or scholarship competitions and sharing her love of music with younger musicians.
Catherine is a member of the National Honor Society, a Freshman Transition Leader, dances, and she loves to write. This year, she is the Editor in Chief of Folio, the literary magazine of Westfield High School. Catherine intends to study music education and cognitive science in college.
