Ilana Shapiro


Ilana Shapiro currently studies flute with Catherine Ransom Karoly, and has been playing for seven years. She is a senior at Dos Pueblos High School in California. Last summer, she was one of eight finalists chosen to compete in the National Flute Association (NFA) High School Soloist Competition in Minneapolis. The previous summer, she was selected as one of three performers in the NFA High School Master Class in San Diego. Last year, Ilana was one of fifteen semifinalists of all instruments, and one of two flutists, from Southern California in the Los Angeles Music Center’s Spotlight Competition to perform at Disney Hall. She is one of two flutists in the semifinals again this year. Ilana has attended summer music festivals including Orford Music Academy in Quebec (studies with Robert Langevin, Paula Robison, Denis Bluteau, and Julien Beaudiment), Jim Walker’s Beyond the Master Class at the Colburn School (studies with Jim Walker and Denis Bouriakov), Northern California Flute Camp (studies with Bonita Boyd), and Music Academy of the West’s MERIT Program. As part of the Orford Music Festival, she gave solo performances in the towns of Bonsecours, Orford, and Sherbrooke.

Ilana played in the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony for five years and received the Music Director’s Award. She won concerto competitions and soloed with both the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony and the Santa Maria Philharmonic. In 2015, her flute/voice/piano trio won top prize at the California MTAC State Voce Competition. Ilana also has received scholarships for several years from the Santa Barbara Music Club and the Performing Arts Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara. She has had additional master classes/lessons with Guy Eshed, Elise Shope Henry, Jill Felber, Marianne Gedigian, Jonathan Keeble, Tadeu Coelho, and Mary Kay Fink, and previously studied with Linda Holland.
