Shang Zhang


Shang Zhang, Mezzo-Soprano who has a rich color voice is currently a first year master voice student at New England Conservatory, studies voice with Ms. Jane Eaglen. Shang was born in 1994 in China. She began playing the piano when she was 6 years old and began studying voice when she was 13 years old with Mr. Bian Jingzu, the head of voice at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music High School where she graduated in 2012. During the same year, she was awarded an Honorable Mention prize in “The First Session of Bergonzi International Vocal Competition”. She awarded full scholarship when she was studying at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore and studied voice with Alan Bennett. Shang was selected as a Joint Degree student between Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music and the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Johns Hopkins University and studying voice with Ms. Phyllis Bryn-Julson. At Peabody, she performed in the opera “Dialogues of the Carmelites” and “Die Entführung aus dem Serail​”at Baltimore Lyric Opera House. She sang Carmen in the opera scene at Peabody as well. In February 2014 she sung in the master class presented by coloratura soprano Sumi Jo. Shang performed the aria “Non so più, cosa son” from the opera “Le nozze di Figaro” with Singapore Symphony Orchestra for the concert ""Come meet Mozart"" in May 2014. She got the first prize of The 2015 Sue Goetz Ross Student Competition for Voice in March 2015. In the summer of 2015, she performed the role Suziki in the opera “Madama Butterfly” in the opera program “La Musica Lirica” in Novafelteria, Italy. Shang awarded high scholarship from New England Conservatory for her master degree in 2016, and she performed the role Spirit in Cendrillon by Massenet in Boston Cutler Majestic Theatre in February, 2017. In April 2017, she will be performing the role Ramiro from Mozart’s opera La Finta Giardiniera in the theatre Paramount in Boston.
