Michelle Koh


Cellist Michelle Koh is a seventeen year old in her fourth year at Phillips Academy Andover in Massachusetts. Miss Koh began playing the cello at the age of seven, and made her concerto debut in a performance playing as a soloist with the International Music Academy Orchestra in Regensburg, Germany when she was ten years old. At the age of eleven, Miss Koh was the youngest student to be invited to attend the National Cello Institute’s Advanced Residency Program. In 2012, she won first place in the American Protégé Competition and subsequently was featured in performance at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall. Miss Koh received first place in both the Orange County area and the greater Los Angeles area ASTA (American Teachers String Association) competitions. She was a prizewinner and scholarship recipient in the Los Angeles Violoncello Society competition. At the age of thirteen, she was invited to be the soloist with the Irvine Symphony Orchestra in Irvine, California in their Rising Stars Concert Series. Since entering Phillips Academy Andover in 2013 as a boarding student, Miss Koh has been the principal cellist at the Academy Symphony Orchestra as well as the Academy Chamber Orchestra. As an orchestra member, she performed in New York, Washington, San Francisco, Stanford University, and Shanghai, China through the annual spring music tour of her school. Miss Koh also constantly explores opportunities to share her time and music by performing at senior centers and by teaching cello to students at the Andover-Lawrence String Program. She has been studying with Sarah Koo since 2007 and is currently serving as co-president at Academy Symphony Orchestra of Phillips Academy.
