A senior at Phillips Academy Andover, Hazel Koh has been playing the violin since the age of five. As a seven-year-old, she attended the International Music Academy in Regensburg, Germany. The following year, she performed in the International Music Academy’s orchestra at Cremona, Italy. In 2010, she made a solo debut with the Fullerton College Symphony. She was also invited to Dr. and Mrs. Vamos’ summer residential program in Chautauqua, New York, won numerous competitions, and participated in a number of masterclasses led by Dr. Roland Vamos, Nathan Cole, and Sandy Yamamoto. She was a merit scholar at the Colburn School from 2014 to 2016, and a member of Ed and Mari Chamber Music Institute at Colburn School and the Colburn Chamber Orchestra. At Phillips Academy, Hazel has been principal and co-concertmaster at the Academy Symphony Orchestra and Academy Chamber Orchestra. Along with the orchestra, she performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and in multiple cities in Portugal through her school’s annual spring music tours. Hazel was also selected to play a solo at an All School Meeting to congratulate the new head of school in December, 2019. She enjoys sharing her music by performing at senior centers, sending her recordings to seniors during recent times, and teaching violin to younger students in the Andover-Lawrence String Program. She currently studies with Maia Jasper and Holly Barnes.
