Joanne Lee


Joanne Lee is a 17-year-old junior at Lincoln High School. She studies with Hyun-Jin Kim and has been playing the cello for eight years. She has also been a part of the Portland Youth Philharmonic for seven years. As a young artist soloist, she performed with the Jewish Community Orchestra this past January. She was awarded a $1,500 scholarship by the Monday Musical Club of Portland in May 2016. Additionally, she won a $250 scholarship as a third place winner in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra young artist soloist competition this year. In May 2015, she was awarded the OMEA Oregon state cello champion in solo music and also competed with her school quintet. She was interviewed by Christa Wessel from All-Classical and featured on Young Musicians on Deck in July 2015.

In October of 2015, she performed in All My Life, a musical theatre tribute to the Beatles, which she was also a part of two years ago. In addition, Joanne has been the scholarship winner of the Oregon Cello Society scholarship competition twice and has performed in the Oregon Benefit Concert for three years in a row. She has been a part of the NAfME All-State orchestra in 2014 and 2016 and All-Northwest orchestra in 2015. In the spring of 2014, she was awarded third in the Oregon state solo competition. She has also been a part of multiple chamber groups, including a trio that won the OMTA ensemble group award in 2013.

Apart from the cello, Joanne plays piano and guitar, and is the music director of her school’s a Capella group, Vivace. She is also the co-president of Music for the Ages, a club at Lincoln that gathers students who play music around the community in nursing homes, and Interact, an international and community service club that is supported by Rotary International.
