Andrew Rim


Andrew Kang Rim has been playing the cello since the age of six.  In 2010, he was admitted to the Juilliard Pre-College Division where he studied with Minhye Clara Kim.  He currently continues his study with Charles Curtis in San Diego, while participating in San Diego Youth Symphony as an assistant principal cellist.

Andrew has won various recognitions over the years, including the 3rd prize in the 14th New York Music Competition in 2010; the 2nd place in The American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition, the cello winner in the Concert Festival at Bruno Walter Auditorium of Lincoln Center, and the 3rd prize in the 16th New York Music Competition, all in 2012.  He was selected to participate in the main rounds of the 7th International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Montreux/Vevey, Switzerland in August of 2012.  During 2013-2014, Andrew won the Gold Prize at the Forte International Music Competition and the 3rd place in the Long Island Conservatory International Music Competition.  In addition, his string quartet won the 1st place in the 4th KRB New York International Music Competition and the 1st place in the Crescendo International Music Competition. In 2014-2015, he was also placed as a finalist in the San Diego Youth Symphony Competition, finalist in the San Diego Symphony “Hotshots” Competition, and was awarded first place as a String Quartet in the MTAC VOCE Chamber Competition.

He has participated in music festivals at Orford Festival, Orford, Canada, and Laus Chamber Festival, Englewood Cliff, NJ, in recent years, and was featured as a soloist in La Jolla SummerFest Coaching Workshop in 2014. At Julliard, he participated in various ensembles, including the chamber pilot program and Pre-College Symphony where he served as the principal cellist during the fall 2013 season. As a senior, he is part of the Torrey Pines High School Advanced Orchestra and the San Diego Youth Symphony, both as Principal Cellist.

Andrew is currently a senior at Torrey Pines High School, and has two younger brothers who occasionally join him in a string trio as violinist and violist.
